From the book jacket:
A story of stunning psychological horror about a group of nice, ordinary kids who learn savage secrets of lust and violence.. a chilling glimpse into a future America where a macabre marathon is a contest with death... an eerie variation on a the theme of "Home Sweet Home".. and a nightmare vision of a ghoulish game show where you bet your life-literally.
Two of the novels you are about to read-Tage and The Long Walk- were completed before Carrie was even begun. The other two, Roadwork and The Running Man, were written in between some of Stephen King's most popular bestsellers to date. And each of them is marked by the undeniable fascination of one of the most brilliant imaginations of our time-collected here for a full house of spine-chilling suspense for the man who made shivering believers of us all...
Moe's Review
On a whole, The Bachman Books is an excellent read. There are four books in this collection and ill discuss each one separately.
Rage. The book that, after Columbine, King had pulled off the shelves permanently. Rage is a very interesting read. A young boy takes his class hostage at gunpoint (obvious to see why King had it pulled). It is a very good psychological read though and it's a shame that it had to be pulled. Thankfully, you can still get the book in this collection.
The Long Walk is easily in the top three of the favorite things that King has ever wrote. It's really an amazing read and I highly suggest you pick up the book purely to read this story.
Roadwork. Roadwork to me is the dud in the book. I just found the story boring and I really couldn't care less about the main character. This one just didn't work for me.
The Running Man. The book differs greatly from the movie but that isn't a bad thing. King wrote this book in a mere 72 hours which just blows my mind. This a balls to the wall action book and is a hell of a ride. |
