When shopping for headphones there are quite a few things that you have to take into account. Where you intend to use your headphones, budget, style, comfort and sound quality are all things you need to look for and think about. Do you just want a pair for casual use, for exercising, noise canceling headphones to drone out jet engine noise, audiophile grade for the ultimate in sound quality, big fat bass or other. Other factors will include comfort, portability, weight, fit, etc. In this article I will discuss some of the different types of headphones and will hopefully educate you enough to make an informed decision when it comes time for you to buy a pair of your own.
By far the best way to determine if a pair of headphones is for you to listen to them. Everyones ears are different and some people will love the sound of one brand while another person may prefer another brand.
Comfort is of course one of the key elements when it comes to buying headphones. Whether you are getting traditional style headphones, in ear headphones, or another style you want to make sure they fit you comfortably but securely. You should try and wear the headphones for a good amount of time, 15-20 minutes if possible to really determine if you like the feel of them.
Weight is another factor to look at. Heavy headphones can cause fatigue if you listen to them for long periods of time. The lighter the better but the flip side is that real high quality headphones tend to weigh more.
The headband on the headphones is another factor to their comfort. Most headphones use the traditional method with the headphone strap going on top of your head. Other styles are available. You can get headphones with a strap that goes around your neck, you can get headphones that clip on to your ears and then there are headphones that do away with the strap completely and just sit in your ear.
If you plan on doing any traveling with your headphones you should consider the portability of any headphones that you buy. Finding small easy to transport headphones is quite easy this day, you can even find some very high quality in-ear headphones that sound fantastic. Some of the traditional over ear headphones come with traveling cases as well. But for general every day use you will probably want a pair of small in ear bud style headphones.
